Formulas
- \(N_{\mathrm{present}} = \mathrm{count}(\mathrm{status}=\mathrm{present})\)
- \(N_{\mathrm{missing}} = \mathrm{count}(\mathrm{status}=\mathrm{missing})\)
- \(\mathrm{Completeness} = \frac{N_{\mathrm{present}}}{N_{\mathrm{total}}} \times 100\%\)
- \(N_{\mathrm{critical\ missing}} = \mathrm{count}(\mathrm{missing\ rows\ marked\ critical})\)
The Arc Flash Input Data Completeness Calculator measures the completeness of an entered study-input list and identifies missing, unknown, and critical-missing records before a qualified specialist performs an incident-energy calculation.
Arc-flash calculations depend on electrical-system data that must be gathered from equipment, protective devices, conductors, transformers, motors, and available fault-current information. A study may also require field-verified details such as device settings, equipment configuration, and other method-specific inputs. If required data is unavailable, an incident-energy result may be incomplete, unsupported, or unsuitable for equipment labeling and work planning.
This worksheet does not calculate incident energy, arc-flash boundary, PPE category, available fault current, protective-device clearing time, or a work conclusion. Its boundary is the entered input list only.
Study Input Rows
Each Study input rows entry represents one item required for the selected study method.
The available fields are:
| Field | Function |
|---|---|
| Input name | Identifies the required study input being tracked |
| Status | Records whether that input is available, missing, or unknown |
| Critical input | Identifies an input whose absence must be separately flagged |
Use Input name to record the actual input required by the selected arc-flash study method or the study engineer’s data-request list. The calculator does not determine which inputs are required; it evaluates only the availability status entered for each row.
The Status field should reflect the condition of the information at the time of review:
- Present means the input has been entered and is available for the study record.
- Missing means the required input is not available in the entered list.
- Unknown means availability or value has not been confirmed.
A row marked Critical input is treated separately when it is missing. This allows a data-collection review to distinguish general incompleteness from an unresolved item that has been designated critical for the selected study scope.
Completeness Calculation
The calculator counts each entered row once. Let:
T= Total inputsP= Present inputsM= Missing inputsU= Unknown inputsC_M= Critical missing inputs
The entered-list relationship is:
\(\displaystyle T = P + M + U\)
The Completeness result is:
\(\displaystyle \mathrm{Completeness} = \frac{P}{T} \times 100\%\)
The calculator separately reports Critical missing inputs as the number of missing rows marked Critical input.
A 100% completeness result means every entered row has a Status of Present. It does not verify that the list contains every input needed for a specific electrical system, that entered values are accurate, or that the selected study method is appropriate.
Calculation Example
Assume the worksheet contains one entered row:
| Study input rows | Input name | Status | Critical input |
|---|---|---|---|
| Row 1 | Protective-device setting record | Present | No |
The calculator result is:
\(\displaystyle T = 1\)
\(\displaystyle P = 1\)
\(\displaystyle M = 0\)
\(\displaystyle U = 0\)
\(\displaystyle \mathrm{Completeness} = \frac{1}{1} \times 100\% = 100\%\)
The resulting output is:
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Total inputs | 1 rows |
| Present inputs | 1 rows |
| Missing inputs | 0 rows |
| Unknown inputs | 0 rows |
| Completeness | 100% |
| Critical missing inputs | 0 rows |
| Completeness status | Complete for entered list |
The status Complete for entered list applies to the single entered row. It does not establish that a protective-device setting record alone is sufficient to calculate incident energy or produce an arc-flash equipment label.
Arc-Flash Study Workflow
This completeness check fits ahead of the calculation stage in an arc-flash study workflow:
- Define the selected study method and the required input list.
- Enter each required item under Input name.
- Assign Status based on available documentation, field verification, or unresolved information.
- Mark Critical input where a missing item requires separate escalation.
- Review Missing inputs, Unknown inputs, and Critical missing inputs before transferring verified data into the engineering study.
The result can help organize data requests involving equipment ratings, conductor sizes in AWG or kcmil, feeder and branch-circuit routing, transformer information, motor contributions, protective-device data, and other system details. Whether any of those items is required depends on the selected study method and the actual distribution system; the calculator does not prescribe the list.
Field and Code Limits
An arc-flash input-list review is not a substitute for electrical engineering judgment, field verification, or the applicable code and safety requirements.
The calculator does not verify:
- The accuracy of a Present entry.
- Whether the Input name is relevant or sufficient for the selected study method.
- Available fault current, equipment withstand ratings, conductor ampacity, voltage drop, raceway fill, or branch-circuit and feeder design.
- Protective-device coordination, clearing time, or device setting validity.
- Incident energy, arc-flash boundary, labeling content, approach boundaries, PPE selection, or energized-work authorization.
- Compliance with NEC requirements, electrical safety procedures, manufacturer instructions, project specifications, or AHJ requirements.
A qualified person or study specialist must establish the study scope, validate field data, select the applicable calculation method, and determine whether the completed study supports equipment labeling and safe-work decisions.
After the input list is complete, compare compatible recorded study values with the Arc Flash Study Scenario Comparison Calculator; that comparison still does not replace the study itself.
FAQs
Does completeness mean the study can be performed?
No. It counts the statuses you enter. The selected method, data quality, project scope, and specialist review determine whether the records are usable.
Does this calculate incident energy?
No. It intentionally stops at input-list completeness and does not calculate incident energy, boundary values, labels, or work conclusions.
