Formulas
- IP code = IP + entered dust digit + entered water digit
- dust digit margin = entered dust digit - required dust digit
- water digit margin = entered water digit - required water digit
- rating comparison = meets entered screen when both margins are zero or greater
Electrical enclosures are commonly identified by an IP code when a project, equipment schedule, product submittal, or manufacturer document states a required level of protection against solid-object ingress and water ingress. The Enclosure IP Rating Screen Calculator produces an entered IP code, a separate dust digit margin, a separate water digit margin, and a rating comparison based on the minimum digits entered for comparison.
The result supports an early equipment-selection review. It helps determine whether an entered enclosure designation, such as IP65, meets the project’s entered dust and water screen before the enclosure is incorporated into equipment layout, outdoor equipment review, washdown-area planning, or control-panel selection.
The calculator evaluates the two IP digits independently. A higher dust digit does not compensate for a lower water digit, and a higher water digit does not compensate for a lower dust digit.
Entered and Required IP Digits
The calculator uses four fields:
| Field | Electrical use |
|---|---|
| Entered dust digit | The dust-protection digit shown in the enclosure, product, submittal, or project information |
| Entered water digit | The water-protection digit shown in the enclosure, product, submittal, or project information |
| Required dust digit | The minimum dust-protection digit used for the comparison |
| Required water digit | The minimum water-protection digit used for the comparison |
The entered digits form the displayed Entered IP code. The required digits establish the threshold for the screen.
For example, an enclosure identified as IP65 has an entered dust digit of 6 and an entered water digit of 5. If the project comparison minimum is IP54, the enclosure exceeds each entered minimum digit separately.
Calculation Basis
The calculator applies the following formulas:
\(\displaystyle \text{IP code} = \text{IP} + \text{entered dust digit} + \text{entered water digit}\)
\(\displaystyle \text{dust digit margin} = \text{entered dust digit} - \text{required dust digit}\)
\(\displaystyle \text{water digit margin} = \text{entered water digit} - \text{required water digit}\)
textbf{status} =
begin{cases}
text{Meets entered screen}, & text{when both margins are } geq 0 \
text{Does not meet entered screen}, & text{when either margin is } < 0
end{cases}
The margins show the numerical difference between the entered digits and the required digits:
- A margin of 0 means the entered digit exactly meets the selected minimum.
- A positive margin means the entered digit is above the selected minimum.
- A negative margin means the entered digit is below the selected minimum.
Calculation Example
Use the following entered values:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Entered dust digit | 6 |
| Entered water digit | 5 |
| Required dust digit | 5 |
| Required water digit | 4 |
The displayed enclosure designation is:
\(\displaystyle \text{IP code} = \text{IP} + 6 + 5 = \text{IP65}\)
The dust comparison is:
\(\displaystyle \text{dust digit margin} = 6 - 5 = \text{1}\)
The water comparison is:
\(\displaystyle \text{water digit margin} = 5 - 4 = \text{1}\)
Because both calculated margins are zero or greater, the Rating comparison is:
\(\displaystyle \text{Meets entered screen}\)
The result means IP65 exceeds the entered dust threshold by one digit and the entered water threshold by one digit. It does not mean that IP65 is automatically suitable for every installation environment.
Electrical Equipment Selection Use
The IP rating screen is useful when comparing enclosure markings during design, procurement, submittal review, and installation planning. Typical uses include:
- Reviewing a control enclosure proposed for a dusty production area.
- Comparing an outdoor disconnect or junction enclosure against a project-specified water-ingress threshold.
- Checking whether an enclosure listed in a panel schedule matches the minimum digits carried in project documentation.
- Sorting candidate field enclosures before confirming manufacturer instructions, mounting conditions, fittings, covers, seals, and environmental exposure.
- Recording a consistent numerical comparison during equipment selection for branch-circuit equipment, feeders, motor controls, instrumentation, and low-voltage control systems.
The calculator is separate from conductor ampacity, AWG or kcmil selection, terminal rating, insulation temperature rating, voltage-drop review, raceway fill, and current-carrying conductor adjustment. Those calculations address electrical loading and conductor installation. An IP designation addresses the stated ingress-protection marking of the enclosure or equipment.
Field Verification
The calculator compares the entered digits only. It does not certify an enclosure rating, product marking, installation condition, environmental suitability, gasket condition, cable-entry method, unused-opening closure, conduit hub selection, drainage, corrosion exposure, washdown method, or equipment suitability.
Confirm the actual product marking and the manufacturer’s installation instructions for the specific enclosure assembly. Field conditions can change the protection provided by the finished installation, especially where doors, covers, conduit entries, cable glands, fittings, seals, mounting orientation, or penetrations differ from the tested or intended configuration.
Where a project specification, electrical drawing, equipment schedule, local requirement, or AHJ direction establishes enclosure requirements, verify the complete requirement separately. The calculator’s Rating comparison reports only whether the two entered IP digits meet the two entered minimum digits.
FAQs
Does the displayed IP code certify a product?
No. It concatenates the entered digits. Product marking, test evidence, installation conditions, and project requirements must be checked separately.
Can a higher digit compensate for a different test condition?
No. The screen compares digits only and does not resolve product scope, environmental exposure, or installation details.
