Formulas

  • duration margin = elapsed duration - target duration
  • completion percent = elapsed duration / target duration x 100
  • remaining time = max(target duration - elapsed duration, 0)
  • planned readings = floor(target seconds / reading interval seconds) + 1

An insulation test duration calculator tracks whether an insulation resistance test has been held for the required test period and whether readings were taken at the intended interval. It produces a timing record rather than an insulation acceptance decision.

The worksheet compares the entered Target duration with the actual Elapsed duration, then reports:

  • Duration margin in minutes
  • Completion as a percentage of the entered target
  • Remaining time
  • Planned readings based on the reading interval
  • Elapsed readings based on time completed
  • Duration comparison

This supports test documentation for branch-circuit conductors, feeders, motor leads, raceway-installed conductors, control circuits, and other equipment where an insulation-resistance test procedure specifies a duration and periodic readings.

A completed timing record may be used alongside the actual megohm readings, test-voltage selection, temperature information, equipment identification, and the approved commissioning or maintenance procedure. The timing result does not establish conductor ampacity, AWG or kcmil suitability, raceway fill, voltage drop, or compliance with an AHJ requirement.

Test Timing Inputs

Enter the timing requirements from the applicable test procedure.

FieldElectrical use
Target durationRequired holding period stated in the test procedure, entered in minutes
Elapsed durationActual completed test time, entered in minutes
Reading intervalIntended time between documented readings, entered in seconds

The target must come from the governing test plan, equipment manufacturer documentation, owner specification, maintenance program, or other approved procedure. It is not derived from conductor insulation temperature rating, terminal rating, ampacity adjustment factor, correction factor, current-carrying conductor count, or voltage-drop calculation.

The reading interval establishes the planned observation points. For example, a 10-minute test with readings every 60 seconds includes an initial reading at time zero and readings at each one-minute mark through the end of the target duration.

Duration Margin and Completion

The calculator evaluates the completed time against the entered requirement using:

\(\displaystyle \text{duration margin} = \text{elapsed duration} - \text{target duration}\)

\(\displaystyle \text{completion percent} = \frac{\text{elapsed duration}}{\text{target duration}} \times 100\)

\(\displaystyle \text{remaining time} = \max(\text{target duration} - \text{elapsed duration}, 0)\)

A negative duration margin means the entered test time is short of the entered target. A zero margin means the target duration has been reached. A positive margin means the elapsed time exceeds the target.

Completion is a timing percentage only. A result of 100% confirms that the elapsed test duration equals the entered target duration; it does not confirm an acceptable insulation-resistance value or a satisfactory insulation condition.

Reading Interval Schedule

The planned number of readings is calculated as:

textbf{planned readings} =
leftlfloor
frac{text{target seconds}}
{text{reading interval seconds}}
rightrfloor + 1

The added one represents the initial reading at the start of the test. The worksheet similarly reports elapsed readings from the completed portion of the entered test duration.

A 60-second interval is often useful for documenting resistance behavior over time, but the interval must match the procedure being followed. The calculator does not evaluate whether the selected interval, test voltage, instrument range, or test method is appropriate for a particular motor winding, feeder, branch circuit, cable assembly, or equipment insulation system.

Calculation Example

Use the entered values:

InputValue
Target duration10 min
Elapsed duration7 min
Reading interval60 s

The duration calculations are:

\(\displaystyle \text{duration margin} = 7 - 10 = -3 \min\)

\(\displaystyle \text{completion} = \frac{7}{10} \times 100 = \text{70\%}\)

\(\displaystyle \text{remaining time} = \max(10 - 7, 0) = \text{3 min}\)

For the reading plan:

text{planned readings} =
leftlfloor
frac{10 times 60}{60}
rightrfloor + 1 =
textbf{11 readings}

The worksheet result is therefore:

ResultValue
Duration margin-3 min
Completion70%
Remaining time3 min
Planned readings11 readings
Elapsed readings8 readings
Duration comparisonBelow entered target

The elapsed-reading count includes the initial reading and each completed 60-second interval through the entered seven-minute elapsed duration.

Insulation Resistance Test Boundary

This worksheet performs timing arithmetic only. It does not set the test voltage, calculate insulation resistance, interpret megohm values, determine polarization index, establish a pass/fail threshold, or define an acceptance procedure.

The electrical decision remains with the applicable test documentation and qualified personnel. Verify separately:

  • The circuit or equipment is isolated, de-energized, locked out, and verified safe under the approved electrical safety procedure.
  • The test instrument and test voltage are appropriate for the equipment under test.
  • Sensitive electronic equipment, surge protective devices, controls, variable-frequency drives, and connected loads are addressed according to the approved procedure.
  • Stored energy is discharged after testing and the tested conductors or equipment are returned to a safe condition.
  • Recorded resistance values, temperature effects, test duration, and acceptance criteria are evaluated under the governing specification, manufacturer instructions, maintenance program, and AHJ or project requirements where applicable.

The calculator’s Duration comparison answers one narrow question: whether the entered elapsed duration meets the entered target duration.

FAQs

Does this tell me how long to test?

No. Enter the duration required by your procedure or equipment instructions.

Does reaching the duration mean the test passes?

No. Duration is only one part of the procedure; readings, safety steps, and qualified review still control.
